The Fault in Our Stars

Author: John Green
Series: None. Stand alone book.
Rate (On a scale of 1-10): 1 Cancer. Bleh.

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

This is a cancer book. I hate cancer books. I wouldn't have read this book unless it was forced upon me. It just so happened that it was by my grandmother and a librarian.

I hate books with sad endings and cancer and sickness and hospitals. I refuse to read most. But if you like bad endings that leave you with some really deep thoughts, this is the book for you! Unfortunately, it's not the book for me.

Hazel was interesting to read, although she really isn't my ideal heroine. She's not like most cancer patients and definitely not like most teenage girls. She's deep for a sixteen year old girl, and her favorite book is about a leukemia patient that has no ending. She's quite a determined girl about this ending.

Augustus was pretty okay. Arrogant, yes, but I happen to like arrogance in a boy. He made the book worth reading for myself. I hate the ending. It felt unfinished, and yet I just wanted it to be over.

I wasn't pleased with Hazel's and Gus' relationship. There was attraction there, that was obvious, but they didn't do anything with it. I felt like I was sitting there, and I was like, come on, come on, come on. I need romance. I need a happy ending. I got one eventually, but it took a long time. A very long time.

Overall this book didn't really do it for me. I like paranormal, and I like relationships that have obvious chemistry right off the bat. Like Clary and Jace off the Mortal Instruments, and like Katy and Daemon off the Lux series. I think I'm starting to see a trend of my favorite couples. Hm.

I'd give the book 2 stars out of five because as I've established, I hate cancer books. But it was also well written with explanations and details.
